Women have lifelong dreams that often are put on the shelf while other demands of life take precedence. Yet, the third chapter of life can be time to bring those dreams to fruition. Case in point: Merry Palmer, who published her first book, a young adult novel called “Voice of the Dolphin,” while in her 60s.

Shownotes:

  • Merry first became interested in becoming a published writer at the age of eight but because of family and career, wasn’t able to fulfill that dream of publishing a book until after retiring. “Voice of the Dolphin” was not the first book she had written; instead, she developed two books unrelated to this one. However, the young adult novel is the first book that has been published.

  • Merry’s interest in writing this young adult novel was based on her interactions with at-risk high school students. She wanted to create a story with an at-risk teenage character who successfully navigates his transformation and steps into his full potential. The book, which is set in Utah and Alaska, also delves into the grandparent-grandson relationship, friendship, self-reliance, independence, and the importance of nature.

  • Merry’s novel highlights the deepening bonds between a grandson and grandfather. She believes intergenerational relationships are important in our fractured society because they often serve as lifesavers. She also wanted to highlight the importance of an older male character serving as a loving, stable and protective role models.

  • Merry plans to write a sequel that will continue to explore the relationship between the grandson, his friends and the grandfather.
